About Jiayuguan

The Jiayuguan Fort, built in 1372, is the most complete and best-preserved ancient military fortress in China — its three concentric walls, watchtowers, and massive gate complexes have stood for over 650 years. The surrounding Gobi Desert landscape is as much of the draw as the fort itself: wild, unrestored sections of Great Wall at Overhanging Wall are awe-inspiring. Jiayuguan also makes a natural stopover on the way to the legendary Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains (3 hrs east), one of China's most vivid geological spectacles.

Water and sunscreen are essential given intense desert sun and dry air

Photography of the fort against the desert sunset is spectacular from the east gate
