About Mudanjiang

Jingpo Lake stretches 45 km and was created 10,000 years ago when a volcanic lava flow dammed the Mudanjiang River. The lake's Diaoshuilou Waterfall — 40 metres wide and the largest volcanic lake waterfall in China — is spectacular in summer and becomes a curtain of ice in winter. Mudanjiang's Korean, Manchu, and Han Chinese cultural blend reflects its borderland history — the Russian border lies just 150 km away. The nearby forests are dense with Manchurian fir and wildlife including Siberian roe deer.

Best Snow Town visits include an overnight stay in the village guesthouses

Jingpo Lake is excellent in summer — combine a boat cruise with the Diaoshuilou Waterfall hike

Northeast Chinese food (dongbei cai) is outstanding here — enormous portions of pork and sauerkraut

Carry warm clothes even in autumn — temperatures drop dramatically after sunset
