About Tashilhunpo Monastery

Tashilhunpo Monastery is the most important monastery in Shigatse and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the second-highest figure in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. Founded in 1447 by the First Dalai Lama, Gendun Drup, the monastery grew over centuries into a sprawling complex of golden-roofed temples, residential colleges, debating courtyards, and towering chörten (stupas) spread across a hillside above the city. At its peak the monastery housed over 4,000 monks; today around 800 reside here. The main attraction is the Chapel of Maitreya, which contains a gilt-bronze statue of the Future Buddha standing 26.2 metres tall — the tallest gilt-bronze statue in the world at the time of its construction in 1914. The tombs of previous Panchen Lamas are housed in elaborately decorated chörten of gold and silver. The monastery's active religious life, its scale, and its relative accessibility compared to Lhasa make it a highlight of any Tibetan itinerary. The Tibet Travel Permit is required.
