About Ya'an

Ya'an was historically known as the start of the Tea-Horse Road, the ancient trade route that carried Sichuan tea to Tibet and brought horses back to China. The city itself is modest and unspoilt by mass tourism, offering refreshing authenticity compared to Chengdu. The Bifengxia Giant Panda Base houses dozens of pandas in a gorge environment with cascading waterfalls and natural bamboo — far more naturalistic than Chengdu's urban facility. Ya'an is also the gateway to Wolong National Nature Reserve (150 km north) and the scenic Luding area to the west.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Humid subtropical mountain climate. Overcast and rainy, especially July–August. Mild winters (avg 7°C), warm summers (avg 27°C). Ya'an is one of Sichuan's rainiest cities — nicknamed "Rain City" — keeping the landscape beautifully green year-round.

Getting There

Ya'an has no commercial airport. Nearest airports are Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU), approximately 150 km east (1.5–2 hrs by expressway). High-speed rail connects Ya'an directly to Chengdu (~1.5 hrs — Ya'an is the current western terminus of the Chengya HSR line). Frequent buses from Chengdu are also available.

Practical Tips

Bifengxia Panda Base is more naturalistic than Chengdu but smaller — book early visits

Arrive at Bifengxia before 9am for panda feeding time and maximum activity

The Bifengxia Gorge scenic area is adjacent to the panda base — combine both in one day

Ya'an is wet — bring a light rain jacket regardless of season

Combine Ya'an with Luding Bridge and Hailuogou Glacier for a classic western Sichuan road trip
