Zhangjiajie's glass-floored canyon bridge — 430 m long, 300 m above the gorge floor
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge spans 430 metres across the Grand Canyon Scenic Area gorge, rising 300 metres above the canyon floor. With its transparent tempered glass deck, this record-breaking suspension bridge designed by architect Haim Dotan opened in 2016 and quickly became one of China's most visited adventure attractions. The 6-metre-wide walkway is supported by steel suspension cables and rests on 68 glass panels, each tested to a load capacity far exceeding normal use. Visitors who dare to look down see a vertiginous drop to the canyon floor, waterfalls, and forested gorge walls. The bridge is the centrepiece of the larger Grand Canyon scenic area, which includes a 72-storey cliff-face elevator, a canyon bottom walk alongside a turquoise river, and numerous viewpoints of the surrounding sandstone cliffs. Combined tickets including the glass bridge, canyon walk, and elevator are available.
