À propos de Leshan

The Leshan Giant Buddha (Dafo) was carved over 90 years beginning in 713 AD by a monk named Haitong who hoped the Buddha's presence would calm the turbulent rivers below. Hidden drainage channels carved into the statue have preserved it from erosion for over a millennium. A full visit including the top platform, steep plank path beside the Buddha, and boat viewing from the river takes most of a day. The nearby Emei Shan — one of Buddhism's four sacred mountains — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Leshan.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Humid subtropical climate similar to Chengdu. Warm rainy summers (avg 28°C), mild winters (avg 7°C). Frequent overcast skies. Mist and fog are common in winter and spring — they can add mystique to the Giant Buddha visit.

Comment s'y rendre

Leshan has no commercial airport; the nearest are Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU), both ~140 km away. High-speed rail connects Leshan directly to Chengdu (~45 min). Day trips from Chengdu are very easy and popular — buses also run frequently.

Conseils pratiques

A boat cruise viewing the Buddha from the river is highly recommended — the full figure is best appreciated from below

Lines for the steep plank path descent can be very long — arrive early to minimize waiting

Combine with Mount Emei (1–3 days) for a complete Sichuan Buddhist heritage experience

The Buddha's toenail alone is the size of a sofa — scale perspective from the boat is unforgettable

Wear shoes with good grip for the steep plank path descent along the cliff face
