À propos de Namtso Lake

Namtso is sacred in Tibetan Buddhism and a major pilgrimage site — Tibetan nomads have circumambulated its 350 km shoreline for centuries. The lake changes color through the day, shifting from deep cobalt to jade green depending on light conditions. The Tashi Peninsula juts into the lake and contains a cave monastery where hermit monks have meditated for generations. The surrounding plateau grasslands are dotted with the black yak-hair tents of nomadic herders. At 4,718 metres — well above Lhasa's already high elevation — proper acclimatization is absolutely essential before visiting.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Extreme high-altitude climate. Cold year-round — summer days reach 15°C but nights drop to 0°C or below even in July. Oxygen at 4,718m is roughly 60% of sea level. UV radiation is intense. Strong persistent winds especially in spring.

Comment s'y rendre

Access from Lhasa: 112 km north via National Highway G109, approximately 3–4 hours by private vehicle. No public transport — visitors must hire a private vehicle or join an organized tour. Tibet Travel Permit plus a separate Additional Permit for Namtso are required. Round-trip transfer from Lhasa typically costs 500–800 RMB per vehicle.

Conseils pratiques

Do NOT visit Namtso as your first stop in Tibet — acclimatize in Lhasa for at least 2–3 days first

Altitude sickness at 4,718m can be dangerous — descend immediately if severe symptoms develop

Overnight stays require warm sleeping bags — nighttime temperatures drop to 5–10°C in peak summer

Plastic waste from tourist tents litters parts of the shore — choose eco-minded camps

Permits for Namtso are separate from the Tibet Travel Permit — arrange in advance through your operator
