The world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge — 430 m spanning a 300 m canyon drop
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed suspension bridge, spanning 430 metres across a 300-metre-deep canyon gorge in the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Scenic Area, separate from but near the main Wulingyuan park. Designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan and opened in 2016, the bridge has a transparent tempered glass deck through which visitors can see directly to the canyon floor 300 metres below. Sixty-eight 4-centimetre-thick glass panels make up the walkway, each tested to support 70 people per panel. On its opening day ticket sales were suspended after visitor numbers overwhelmed the site; the bridge was briefly closed twice in its first month for structural inspections. A bungee jumping platform at the midpoint offers the world's highest bungee jump from a bridge. The surrounding canyon scenery — waterfalls, hanging gardens, and sandstone cliffs — makes the approach walk almost as spectacular as the bridge itself.
