A tranquil 7.5 km valley walk through towering sandstone pillars beside a crystal-clear mountain stream
Golden Whip Stream (Jinbian Xi) is a 7.5-kilometre walking trail along a shallow, crystal-clear mountain stream threading through the heart of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park's Suoxiyu Valley. The path follows the stream at the base of towering sandstone pillars — some rising over 400 metres on either side of the narrow valley — through dense subtropical forest of sweet gum, dawn redwood, and maidenhair trees. The "golden whip" refers to the tallest pillar visible from the trail: a slender 350-metre column that catches the light in a golden glow at dawn. The stream itself is remarkably clean, home to large populations of the Chinese giant salamander and freshwater turtles that sun themselves on midstream rocks; macaque monkeys are commonly seen in the canopy above. The trail is largely flat and well-maintained, making it the most accessible major walk in the park. It is particularly beautiful in autumn when the deciduous trees turn orange and yellow and morning mist fills the valley between the pillars.
