Historic iron-chain bridge and gateway to the Hengduan Mountains
The Luding Bridge, built from 13 massive iron chains each 40 metres long, is a national monument preserved as both a feat of engineering and a site of revolutionary history. The surrounding scenery — deep Dadu River gorge, snow-capped Gongga Mountain — is spectacular. Luding is the natural waypoint on the journey between Chengdu and western Sichuan, Kangding, or the Hailuogou Glacier Park just 50 km to the west, where one of China's most accessible glaciers descends to 1,600 metres altitude.
