Giant pandas in a forest canyon setting — the largest panda reserve outside Chengdu
The Bifengxia Giant Panda Base in Ya'an is the second-largest giant panda research and breeding centre in the world, housing over 30 giant pandas in spacious forested enclosures in the subtropical canyon of Bifeng Gorge. Established in 2003 as an overflow facility for the Chengdu Panda Base when that facility reached capacity, Bifengxia has the most natural setting of any panda centre in China: the animals live in multi-level enclosures with dense bamboo forest, streams, and climbing structures integrated into the steep gorge walls. Many pandas born at Chengdu are transferred here for rewilding programmes. Visitors can observe pandas eating, sleeping, and playing in environments closer to their natural habitat than in urban zoo settings. The centre also houses red pandas (firefox) in adjacent enclosures. Unlike Chengdu, which can feel overwhelmingly crowded, Bifengxia receives fewer visitors and the pace is more relaxed. The surrounding Bifeng Gorge scenic area with waterfalls and hiking trails can be combined with the panda visit for a full-day excursion from Chengdu (approximately 2.5 hours by bus or car).
