Avatar's floating mountains come to life in Hunan's stone pillars
Zhangjiajie city serves as the urban gateway to the vast Wulingyuan Scenic Area 45 km north. The park's defining feature — thousands of vertical quartzite columns rising from subtropical forest — was formed over 380 million years as quartz sandstone was uplifted and sculpted by wind and water. Above the city, Tianmen Mountain (1,519m) is reachable by the world's longest cable car (7.5 km) and features the dramatic Tianmen Cave — a natural arch 131 metres high. The region is home to the Tujia and Miao ethnic minorities.

Subtropical humid climate. Mild winters (avg 5°C in January), warm summers (avg 28°C in July). The park is frequently misty and cloud-covered — creating the most atmospheric conditions for the pillar landscape. Rainfall peaks April–June. Autumn is the clearest and most colorful season.
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) with flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and growing international connections. High-speed rail from Changsha (~2 hrs), Guiyang (~2.5 hrs), Chongqing (~4 hrs), Shanghai (~8 hrs). Wulingyuan Scenic Area is 45 km from city center by public bus (40 min) or taxi.
Buy multi-day scenic area tickets — the park is far too large for a single day visit
Staying inside the scenic area (Wulingyuan town) allows you to access viewpoints at sunrise before crowds arrive
Cable cars can have long queues — consider the elevated rail monorail as an alternative where available
Partially cloudy weather is optimal — fully overcast or fully clear both have disadvantages
Book the Glass Bridge well in advance online — daily visitor numbers are strictly limited
