City
Ancient capital of 13 dynasties, home of the Terracotta Army
Xi'an's Tang Dynasty city walls — the most complete ancient city walls in China, stretching 14 km around the old city — are easily walked or cycled in a half-day. Within the walls, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower mark the city center, and the vibrant Muslim Quarter (Huijie) around the Great Mosque is a sensory feast of hand-pulled noodles, persimmon cakes, and pomegranate juice. Outside the city, the Terracotta Army's three pits hold thousands of life-sized warriors, horses, and chariots guarding the mausoleum of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor to unify China.
