City of Eternal Spring, gateway to Yunnan's wonders
Kunming has transformed from a sleepy provincial capital into a modern, cosmopolitan city with a thriving café culture, international cuisine, and vibrant nightlife. The Stone Forest (Shilin) — a UNESCO Geopark of grey limestone formations 85 km east — is Kunming's most famous attraction, but the city itself offers the serene Dianchi Lake, the beloved Green Lake (Cuihu) park packed with red-billed seagulls in winter, and a Muslim quarter centered around Nancheng Mosque. Kunming is the jumping-off point for Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, and all of Yunnan.

Subtropical highland climate known as "Eternal Spring." Temperatures range 8–21°C year-round with low humidity. July–August is rainy season with brief afternoon showers. Winter days are warm and sunny. Plateau UV radiation is intense — use high-SPF sunscreen.
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is a major hub with routes across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and all Chinese cities. High-speed rail to Guiyang (~2 hrs), Chengdu (~4 hrs), Guangzhou (~9 hrs). Trains to Dali (3.5 hrs), Lijiang (4 hrs). Overland routes to Vietnam and Laos are available.
Altitude is nearly 1,900m — some visitors experience mild adjustment; stay hydrated
Stone Forest requires a full day — go early to avoid tour group peaks at midday
