The Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayan Ta) was built in 652 AD to house the Buddhist scriptures and relics brought from India by the monk Xuanzang, whose 17-year journey inspired the classic novel Journey to the West. The seven-storey, 64-metre brick pagoda is one of the best-preserved examples of early Tang dynasty Buddhist architecture and stands in the Da Ci'en Monastery complex with a vast public plaza.
