Harbin Ice and Snow World

The world's largest ice festival — a glowing city of illuminated palaces carved from Songhua River ice

About Harbin Ice and Snow World

Harbin Ice and Snow World is the centrepiece of the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, held each January and February on the north bank of the Songhua River. The park covers over 600,000 square metres and is built entirely from massive blocks of ice cut from the frozen Songhua River, each block roughly 1 metre thick. Hundreds of sculptors spend weeks carving these blocks into elaborate replicas of world landmarks, fairy-tale castles, pagodas, and abstract sculptures, then hollow them out and install coloured LED lighting that makes the entire park glow in jewel-like blues, greens, reds, and purples after dark. The scale is staggering — some ice buildings stand 30 metres tall. Ice slides, an ice bar, and an open-air hot spring add to the experience. Temperatures during the festival regularly reach -20°C or lower; visitors must dress in extreme-cold gear. The park typically opens in late December and closes in late February.
