Ancient Naxi town beneath the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Lijiang's Old Town (Dayan) is a remarkably intact ancient settlement where 450 km of canals still run with clear water from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The Naxi Dongba culture — with its unique pictographic script still in daily use — adds intellectual depth to a destination that can otherwise feel over-touristed. Baisha village, 8 km north, retains more authentic character. The Mu Family Mansion tells the story of the Naxi chieftains who ruled the region for centuries, while Tiger Leaping Gorge begins just 60 km to the north.
