About Zhongyang Pedestrian Street

Zhongyang Street (Central Avenue) is Harbin's premier commercial boulevard, stretching 1.4 kilometres through the heart of the Daoli District between the Songhua River embankment and Jingwei Street. Built in 1898 as a dirt track to service Russian railway construction camps, it was paved in 1924 with distinctive granite blocks — roughly 144,000 of them — that remain today. The street is lined with 71 European-style buildings in Art Nouveau, Baroque, and Gothic styles built by Russian, Jewish, Polish, and German settlers during the early 20th century, earning Harbin the nickname "the Paris of the East." Today the street is a pedestrianised shopping zone with international brands alongside traditional Harbin specialities: red sausage (Harbin red sausage), beer, and toffee. In winter it is one of the city's best spots to admire ice sculptures and snow carvings produced along its length, and the Russian architecture looks particularly striking dusted with snow.
